Visit East Africa with DC 101

Next, move south to Tanzania and get wild on a safari among lions, leopards, elephants and more wildlife native to the world-famous Serengeti. Itinerary

Day 1 / Friday, September 4th
Depart Washington Dulles International Airport 10:05am

Day 2 / Saturday, September 5th
Today you begin your adventure to Ethiopia in Addis Ababa, the gateway to East Africa. Enjoy a half-day of sightseeing touring the National Museum and the Ethiopian Ethnological Museum. You will have a tour of Haile Selassie’s former palace which is now the home of the Ethnological Museum. The National Museum, known to be the best museum in Africa, where cultural and archaeological relics, including a plaster of “Lucy” the 3.2 million-year old Hominid, are displayed. Then drive out to Mt. Entoto for a breathtaking view of the city and enjoy the natural beauty of Ethiopia. Return to the city and enjoy a trip to Merkato for shopping in the outdoor market. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant for a traditional Ethiopian meal, dance performance and coffee ceremony. Hotel: De Leopol.

Day 3 / Sunday, September 6th
Fly to Lalibela, described as the 9th wonder of the world, for a day of touring what is considered to be one of the holiest cities in Ethiopia. Start your exploration with the twelve majestic rock-hewn churches – Followed by a visit to the break taking Bette Giorgis church, carved in the shape of a cross set apart from the other church groupings. All guests will enjoy a traditional Ethiopian outdoor feast in the evening. Hotel: Yemereha.

Day 4 /
Monday, September 7th
On the second day, travel by mule to the Ashetan Maryam Church, located in the mountains high above Lalibela. Enjoy breath taking views as you look out over Ethiopia. In evening, enjoy Ethiopian feast. Hotel: Yemereha

Day 5
/ Tuesday, September 8th
Depart Lalibela after breakfast for flight to Tanzania. Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to Arusha for lunch at the New Arusha Hotel. After lunch, drive to Lake Manyara National Park for an afternoon game-viewing drive, with the possibility of sighting the famous tree-climbing lions. Here you will experience a variety of habitats and diverse animals and birds. Witness the large flock of flamingoes descending on Lake Manyara. Dinner at Lake Manyara Serena Hotel. Hotel: Lake Manyara Hotel or similar.

Day 6 / Wednesday, September 9th
After an early breakfast, enjoy a game viewing drive departing for world-famous Ngorongoro Crater via Olduvai Gorge. Olduvai Gorge is a site of archaeological findings, where traces of pre-historic man dating back to 3.5 million years ago have been discovered. Enjoy lunch at the lodge then head back out for an afternoon safari followed by dinner. Hotel: Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge or similar.

Day 7 / Thursday, September 10th
After breakfast, drive back into the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning of game viewing. Drive across the dense forest and near the Soda Lake and enjoy viewing of a wide variety of bird life. Ascend to the lodge from the 2,000 foot deep crater for lunch and an afternoon live broadcast. After broadcast, head back to Mount Kilimanjaro for dinner. Hotel: Springlands Hotel Moshi

Day 8 / Friday, September 11th
Enjoy breakfast at hotel then head out to discover the city. Enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro, discover a Masai village, and enjoy a walking tour of Moshi. Afternoon broadcast and prepare for departure back to the U.S.

Day 9 / Saturday, September 12th
Arrive Washington Dulles International Airport.
