Queen of Sheba Timket Photography Journey

Day 1 / Jan 17
Today you begin your adventure to Ethiopia in Addis Ababa, the gateway to East Africa. When you arrive at hotel, orientation, equipment prep and lecture will take place in regards to the photography excursion. Includes: ground transportation to and from airport, hotel,  professional English speaking guide, all entrance fees and hotel accommodations at the Hilton Hotel (hotel accommodations and pricing may vary depending on your preference).

Day 2 / Jan 18
In morning, fly to Bahir Dar. Bahir Dar is a pleasant city located on the shores of Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia. There are 37 islands on lake Tana and 30 of them have churches and monasteries of considerable historical and cultural interest. Upon arrival in Bahir Dar, check in to hotel. In the afternoon, take a boat ride on Lake Tana to admire the beautiful monasteries. Photography excursion will include Zeghie Peninsula, Round Grass Churches, Monasteries and bird life. Day 3 / Jan 19
Early Morning, hike out to Blue Nile Falls. It plunges from over a 45-m-high rock face to form one of Africa's most spectacular waterfalls. Drive to Gondar and upon arrival check into hotel. In Gondar, there are a dozen castles built by various emperors over the course of 236 years. Visit the royal enclosure containing six castles, a complex network of connecting tunnels, raised walkways and several smaller buildings. Enjoy Timket festivities in the eve. Day 5 / Jan 21
In morning, fly to Lalibela, described as the 8th wonder of the world, fro two days of touring what is considered to be one ot the holiest cities in Ethiopia. Start your exploration with the twelve majestic rock-hewn churches. Begin with the breathtaking Bette Giorgis church, carved in the shape of a cross and set apart from the other church groupings. Included: Flight from Gondar to Lalibela, breakfast, lunch and dinner, hotel accommodations (Yemereha Hotel based on availability), ground transportation to and from hotel and excursions, soft drinks and water during meals and excursions, professional English speaking guide, all entrance fees.

Day 6 / Jan 22
On the second day, travel by mule to the Ashetan Maryam Church, located in the mountains high above Lalibela. In the afternoon, visit the Makuto Le'Abe Monastery, home to an impressive collection of ancient crosses, illustrated manuscripts and other famous icons. Day 7 / Jan 23
Fly to Axum and upon arrival check into hotel. It is believed that the son of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon brought the Ark of the Covenant to Axum and that it remains here to this day, preserved in a sanctuary. Begin with a tour of Stelae Park, St Mary of Zion Church and the Sanctuary Chapel, the reputed resting place of the "Ark of the Covenant." You will also tour the Coronation yard, Queen of Sheba's palace ruins, the Axum Museum and the tombs of King Kalab and Gerbre Meskel. Day 8 / Jan 24

Photography Journey Leaders

#Asfaw
Andarge Asfaw, award-winning editorial/fine art photographer, author and educator, was born in Ethiopia. His powerful portraits and luminous landscapes have been exhibited in several exhibitions and are held in private collections. Asfaw's book of photographic imagery, Ethiopia from the Heart, was released in June 2007. Asfaw teaches photography at the Washington School of Photography, The Art League School, and The Metropolitan Center for the Visual Arts. He leads cultural and travel photography excursions in the U.S. and Ethiopia. Asfaw is a graduate of The Hallmark Institute of Photography.
   
#Donna Donna T. Jones, educator, portrait/fine-art photographer and photo-editor, was born in Washington, DC. Her imagery, contemplative and rich in texture centers on human and plant forms. Jones is a photography instructor in the credit/non-credit programs at Howard Community College. In addition, she teaches at The Art League School, Glen Echo Photoworks, VisARTS Center, and The Washington School of Photography. Jones leads unique photography field workshops in the U.S. and abroad, such as photography by kayak, offering a deeper experience of photography in nature. She is the photo editor/co-producer of Ethiopia from the Heart. Jones holds a degree in Photography from The College of Notre Dame of Maryland.
   
#Greg Greg Knott, portrait/editorial/wedding photographer, was born in California. His imagery has been published in numerous national and international publications. His communicative portraiture style portrays the delicacy of human relationships. He leads digital, portrait and travel workshops in the US and abroad and teaches at the Washington School of Photography. Knott studied art and photography at Santa Barbara City College, The Washington School of Photography and The Nikon School.
